Steps in Creating "Fleeting Beauty"

The first step of my process is to paint a detailed grisaille (gray) underpainting, over which I then apply layer upon layer of very thin, color glazes of oil paint.

The process of glazing is a simple one, once learned, and it offers the painter the opportunity to deal with one of the three dimensions of color--value-- independently of the other two dimensions, hue and chroma. Doing this allows me to work upon different aspects of a painting as separate units of concentration, and it becomes a very predictable, and enjoyable method of painting.

  1. Bill, I have a question, wouldn't glazing over your value scheme darken or either lighten your grays depending on which color you glaze with? A value scheme can be beautiful by itself, just wondering your opinion on this.

  2. I consider that a grisaille underpainting is to serve as a "value map" or "guide" for the color glazes that I apply over it. I choose the colors for my glaze applications accordingly. I use dark colors over the dark values of the grisaille, and light colors over the light values of the grisaille.

Also, I choose my paints for their colors, and not for their transparency or opacity, as that truly is of very little consequence to the glazing process.
